Despite improved access to education for girls in India, several obstacles prevent the translation of these gains to improved gender equity:

Schools often actively perpetuate gender-based discrimination and violence.
Deeply rooted social norms favoring boys over girls.
Breakthrough is working with government bodies, education administrators, and teachers to create a generational shift by developing schools into spaces that promote gender equality. With Co-Impact’s support, Breakthrough’s work over the next five years aims to ensure:
66,000 teachers trained on gender equity principles.
4 million adolescents across three districts in two states reached with gender-transformative education.
500,000 girls will stay longer in school with a 4-7% reduction in dropout rates in two states.
In two years, Breakthrough has achieved:
1816 teachers qualified as trainers on gender concepts and facilitation skills in Punjab and Odisha.
44,780 teachers in Punjab and 28,060 in Odisha trained in gender-aware education.
12,250 schools in Punjab and 23,000 schools in Odisha reached with Breakthrough’s education model.
